Gaillimh le Gaeilge, in partnership with Galway City Tidy Towns and with support from Snap Galway, is working with businesses and organisations to make it [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":29137,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Just Art It, Murphy&amp; Me, Irish Socksciety and Feachtas Rotha\u00edochta na Gaillimhe were announced as category winners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<p>The Gradam Sheosaimh U\u00ed \u00d3gartaigh gala awards ceremony saw an impressive turnout on Monday (27<sup>th<\/sup> May) in The Hardiman, Eyre Square when Gradam finalists, their family, colleagues, and friends as well as Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge gathered, to commemorate the fantastic bilingual endeavours of businesses and organisations in Galway city.<\/p>\n<p>The renowned musicians, M\u00e1ir\u00edn Fahy, Yvonne Fahy, Chris Kelly and Colm Henry of Trad on the Prom performed on the night as well as World Champion Dancers, Evan O\u2019Brien, and Owen Gaughan, creating an energetic atmosphere and celebratory feel.<\/p>\n<p>In her opening remarks to the guests, Br\u00edd N\u00ed Chongh\u00f3ile, Pr\u00edomhfheidhmeannach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge fondly remembered Ronnie O\u2019Gorman, founder and chairman of the Galway Advertiser, and main sponsor of the Gradam since its establishment in 2002. Guests were presented with a statement from Declan Varley, the Group Editor of the Galway Advertiser. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Irish language is a jewel in the Galway crown. As such, it is our responsibility to ensure it is preserved for future generations. At the time of great advances in terms of Artificial Intelligence, there is a danger that as a society we will opt for easier ways of getting things done that require less critical thinking. \u00a0 We cannot allow An Ghaeilge to become one of the skills and treasures that we let slip along the way merely because it is perceived as being the difficult option. The Galway Advertiser was founded by Ronnie O\u2019Gorman to highlight just how special Galway is, and as such, we are delighted to pledge our support as the Gradam main sponsor to Gaillimh le Gaeilge for this year and beyond.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cllr Eddie Hoare, Mayor of the City of Galway, took time out from his busy election campaign to present the Gradam Teastais to each of the finalists.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne TD, announced the overall winners and the five category winners. \u00a0In its 22nd year, the Minister of State announced Lally Tours as the overall winner of the Gradam 2024 and is named the 15th Tribe of Galway.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on in the evening, they were announced as the winner of the \u2018Tourism\u2019 Category, sponsored by<strong> F\u00e1ilte Ireland, <\/strong>and went on to scoop the overall award. They received a beautiful sculpture designed especially for the Gradam by P\u00e1draic Reaney, depicting the 14 Tribes of Galway, with one extra tribe outstanding, symbolising the Gradam winner \u2013 the new Tribe of Galway. They will receive an advertising package from the main sponsor of the Gradam, the <strong>Galway Advertiser<\/strong>, a publicity package with <strong>TG4<\/strong> and one year\u2019s membership of <strong>Galway Chamber<\/strong> and <strong>Gaillimh le Gaeilge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The other proud Gradam award winners on the night were: <strong>Just Art It - <\/strong>Winner of the \u2018Retail\u2019 Category, sponsored by <strong>Galway Bay FM<\/strong><strong>; Murphy &amp; Me<\/strong> Winner of the \u2018Customer Service\u2019 Category, sponsored by <strong>Computer Troubleshooters<\/strong>; <strong>Irish Socksciety <\/strong>Winner of the \u2018Digital\u2019 Category sponsored by <strong>Platform 94<\/strong>; <strong>Feachtas Rotha\u00edochta na Gaillimhe<\/strong> Winner of the \u2018Community &amp; Culture\u2019 Category, sponsored by <strong>Acadamh na hOllscola\u00edochta Gaeilge, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Gradam category winners all received a business package to the value of \u20ac2,000 from their respective category sponsor as well as a replica of Gradam Sheosaimh U\u00ed \u00d3gartaigh sponsored by <strong>\u00dadar\u00e1s na Gaeltachta. <\/strong><strong>MOLSC\u00c9AL<\/strong> are also sponsoring the Gradam again this year and created the video on the night, taking in all the action of the winners and finalists at the event.<\/p>\n<p>This year's <strong>\u2018Bronnadh Speisialta na Molt\u00f3ir\u00ed\u2019<\/strong> was awarded to a new business that has entered the Gradam for the first time and has achieved a very high standard.\u00a0 Judy Greene Pottery sponsored this award and it was presented to <strong>Dar\u00f3g Wine Bar<\/strong>, on Dominick Street. Dar\u00f3g has also just won the Connaught and All-Ireland titles for Best Wine Experience at the Irish Restaurant Association Awards.<\/p>\n<p>As recognition of their commitment to learning the Irish language, two businesses were awarded <strong>University Scholarships<\/strong>. The two-year scholarship on the language acquisition course, \u2018An Diopl\u00f3ma sa Ghaeilge\u2019, a university qualification sponsored by Acadamh na hOllscola\u00edochta Gaeilge, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe was presented to <strong>Galway Art Academy<\/strong> and <strong>Wild Atlantic Wicks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the Gradam Sheosaimh U\u00ed \u00d3gartaigh award, Minster of State, Thomas Byrne TD said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>D\u00e9anaim comhghairdeas leis na s\u00e9 cinn d\u00e9ag de ghn\u00f3lachta\u00ed agus d\u2019eagra\u00edochta\u00ed at\u00e1 roghnaithe i mbabhta ceannais an Ghradaim i mbliana. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I am pleased to be here tonight to recognise and celebrate all your bilingual achievements.\u00a0\u00a0This marks my first trip to Galway City as Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and I would like to congratulate all the Gradam participants, particularly the Gradam finalists here this evening.\u00a0 Having people from all over the world living and working in Galway City \u2013 cherishing their own languages and backgrounds but also embracing the Irish language and culture in their businesses and organisations \u2013 is truly inspiring.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Speaking of the winners, Margaret Jenkins, Wild Atlantic Way manager, F\u00e1ilte Ireland, said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMar mholt\u00f3ir do Ghradam Sheosaimh U\u00ed \u00d3gartaigh, I was both heartened and impressed by how businesses are incorporating the Irish language into their day-to-day operations. Galway\u2019s bilingual status provides a unique differentiating factor for the city, and we have heard first-hand from businesses how this creates a unique and immersive experience for tourists. The Gradam is a wonderful way of encouraging business with all levels of Irish to stitch the language into their business and the standard of this year\u2019s applicants was very high, particularly amongst newcomers. I look forward to working with these tourism businesses to further develop this as offerings for tourism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Cathaoirleach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge, Dr. John Breslin congratulated all of the winners and commended their bilingual work.\u00a0 He thanked Aire St\u00e1it na Gaeltachta and his Department for their continued support of Gaillimh le Gaeilge as its main funders.\u00a0\u00a0 He announced that Gaillimh le Gaeilge's next project will be to facilitate the establishment of an Irish Language Culture Centre for Galway city.
